Glen Scotia is delighted to unveil its auction lot for the coveted Distillers One of One event, taking place at Hopetoun House in Scotland on Thursday, 5th October.
The 49 Year Old (42.5% ABV) bottling is a masterpiece, with extraordinary whisky drawn from the distillery’s oldest remaining cask reserves and customised packaging showcasing the work of the distillery’s artist in residence, Alice Angus.
Distilled in 1973, this remarkable liquid has been gently matured exclusively in American oak casks, following traditional methods, allowing it to embody the renowned subtle maritime character of Campbeltown, and offering custodians a rare glimpse into the history of this iconic distillery.
The lot will be presented in an exquisite 70cl Glencairn decanter crafted from 30% lead crystal, which is enclosed in a bespoke walnut case crafted by expert carpenters.
Within the case, Alice Angus has hand painted three maple panels sides using watercolour and acrylic, carefully selecting pigments which reflected the rich, golden colour of the whisky and painting numerous layers to emulate the depth of the Glen Scotia story.
Created entirely for Distillers One of One auction, the artwork is named ‘The Knowledge of Years’ and provides a captivating window into the distillery’s heart, making the lot not only a collector’s item but also a true work of art.
Also included in the donation is a one-of-a-kind framed artwork ‘Heart of the Run’ from Alice Angus and Glen Scotia’s ‘Spirit Safe’ exhibition. The exhibition was launched following Alice’s Glen Scotia residency, where she spent multiple weeks capturing the essence of the fifth whisky region, its history, unique coastal landscape and its most award-winning and enduring distillery.
‘Heart of the Run’ was inspired by the heat, steam, smells and sounds of the still room, and the knowledge involved in the creation of whisky, knowing at just the right moment when it is ready.
This sublime whisky collectors’ item will be auctioned at Distillers One of One, which is hosted in partnership with Sotheby’s and is an unparalleled collection of one-off, never-to-be-repeated Scotch whiskies from around the country.
Proceeds from the auction will principally go to The Youth Action Fund, which aims to transform lives of the most disadvantaged young people in Scotland, by empowering them to develop their confidence, resilience, and skills, ultimately preparing them for a successful life and career.
Iain McAlister, Master Distiller and Distillery Manager commented: “We take immense pride in our involvement with Distillers One of One and the fantastic work which The Youth Action Fund will deliver with the proceeds. Our auction this year is a wonderful show of Glen Scotia and its fascinating story – from the 49 Year Old whisky, drawn from our oldest remaining cask reserves, to the incredible presentation display which showcases the artistry of Alice Angus and her storytelling around the prevailing spirit of Campbeltown. This is a true collectors’ item.”
Alice Angus, Glen Scotia artist-in-residence added: “I'm delighted to partner with Glen Scotia, supporting The Distillers One of One charity and its transformational work developing skills and resilience in young people. My artworks ‘Heart of the Run’ and ‘The Knowledge of Years’, are inspired by the determination and skills of people that have safeguarded Glen Scotia for generations, and their mastery of knowing the moment when the spirit is ready.”
